In addition to reading a book, read the solo while listening to it. **Tip Put the solo into your iPod or something similar and listen to it when you go to sleep. Read through the list carefully to find your solo.ġ) READ THE MUSIC WHILE LISTENING! DO NOT PLAY UNTIL YOU DO THIS! This activity may be the best way to really get a solo going.Ģ) Now, slowly work through the solo, measure by measure WITHOUT the recording, refer to it if you are stuck in a spot.ģ) Once you've pretty much mastered the notes, try to gain speed then eventually play with the recording. I'm just dumping in the recordings and music as it comes. These recordings may not fly in Carnegie Hall, but they at least give you an idea as to the tempo and style of the solo. While vocalists are not asked to perform scales at their adjudication, they are required to sight sing after performing their piece. The first is major scales performed from memory, the second is the NYSSMA piece itself, and the last is a short sight-reading example.
